Grew up at 15, Providence Place with his parents John and Margaret Colling before enlisting in Beverley in 1915 into the 8^th Battalion, East Yorkshire Regt.  After training he was sent to the trenches in Belgium and was killed in action during the Battle of Arras.  Initially, he was posted M.I.A. on 29^th June 1917, but his body was recovered by advancing troops some time later and laid to rest in a communal grave.
