Thomas William DUKES (62734, Gunner)

b. 1878, Filey  d. Mon. 7th Aug. 1916 (aged 38)

 

Tom Dukes was another of the Filey casualties who had spent virtually all his life in or around Filey, but very early on in the war signed up to ‘do his bit’.  He enlisted into the Royal Field Artillery in Hull and on arrival in France was posted to ‘D’ Battery, 102nd Brigade Royal Field Artillery where he served for many months and was involved in the immense bombardment of the German Trench system on the Somme in preparation for the 1916 Somme Offensive.

          He survived the opening stages of the battle but died a month later of wounds received in the field, his last moments being spent at Flatiron Copse advanced dressing station.  After he had died he was buried in Flatiron Copse Cemetery and his wife, Annie, who lived at 31, Hope Street was notified.
