David Page FOX (226038, Private)

b. 1887, Filey  d. Thu. 3rd May 1917

David had originally grown up in Filey but when he married moved to Hunmanby, the place of his wife Elizabeth’s birth.  Their address was given as ‘The Forge’.   Although he did not enlist at the start of the war, he was placed in the 10th East Yorkshire Regt., or more commonly called the 1st Hull Pals, as this was a local battalion raised by Hull in September 1914, and was the same battalion that Edward Gash (see 1918) belonged to.

He was killed in action at the Battle of Oppy Wood on 3rd May 1917, which caused heavy casualties amongst the Hull Pals battalions.  At the end of the day, one in four men from his battalion were wounded, and it was eventually established that one in six had been killed, David Fox amongst them.  He is remembered on the Arras Memorial in France, as like many of his comrades his body was never found.
