Edward GASH (29769, Private)

Edward GASH (29769, Private)

b. 1899, Filey  d. Thu. 1st Aug. 1918 (aged 19)

Edward, like George Douglas, had seen very little of the war when he passed away as he had been conscripted as soon as he was old enough into the East Yorkshire Regt.  After training he was sent to France and attached to the 1st Hull Pals (the 10th Battalion), the same regiment that David Fox and William Skelton had served in (although they had fallen before his arrival). After reaching Belgium, Edward lasted a mere four weeks before being killed in action and is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial.  It is worth noting that in the 10th Battalion at this time that the average age was 19 years, showing how few of the original 1914 volunteers were left.

The Gash family suffered badly during the war, as Edward and Mary lost their two sons, David and Edward within three months of each other, and also lost their son-in-law, Albert Stonehouse, two years prior to that.
