John William GLENTON (240396, Lance-Corporal)

John William GLENTON (240396, Lance-Corporal)

b. 1884, Whitby       d. Tue. 26th Mar. 1918 (aged 34)

Although John is remembered on the Filey memorial the rest of his family lived in Muston at Mount Pleasant; this included his wife Margaret and his parents John and Hannah.  Presumably, his wife had left their home on Mitford Street where they managed a small dairy business when he was conscripted and moved to live with his parents, as he is commemorated in both Filey and Muston.

He was conscripted in early 1916, and joined the 5th Battalion Yorkshire Regt. in Scarborough like many of the other Filey casualties.  After training, he was sent to the trenches where he served for over twelve months performing, at some point, a gallant action which resulted in his award of the Military Medal making him the only Filey soldier in the ranks during the First World War to be decorated.  John died in the first week of the German Spring Offensive of 1918 and is remembered on Pozieres Memorial.
