William HARLAND (306216, Private)

b. 1879, Filey  d. Thu. 17th Oct. 1918 (aged 39)

 

          Richard had lived in Filey for his entire life, when he had married it was to Daisy, a Filey girl, and the couple lived at 9, Queens Terrace, West Parade.  He had grown up at New Holme, The Gardens where his parents Richard and Esther still lived and worked at Messrs. Sawdon Brothers of Filey for over twenty years.  In 1915 he enlisted in the Royal Engineers as 1988, Sapper Harland and was posted to Durham Section whom he served with until the end of 1917.  At this time he joined the 5th Battalion of the newly formed Royal Tank Corps where he retrained and served for several months with.  He was wounded in action on the 17th October and was seen to at a casualty clearing station, where a Chaplain wrote a letter home from him to his wife, but unfortunately as he was being taken back to base he succumbed to his injuries.  He was laid to rest in Tincourt New British Cemetery, the same place as where Albert Clark is buried.
