Jenkinson HAXBY (19795, Lance Corporal)
b.
1893, Filey d. Fri. 7th July
1916 (aged 23)
Jenkinson was raised at 16, Mitford Street
by his parents Matthew Crimlisk Haxby and Elizabeth
Ann Haxby. He
worked as a baker’s apprentice at Heptinstall’s
bakery before becoming a fully qualified baker at the same shop until he joined
up in late 1914. He enlisted in
Scarborough into the 2nd Battalion, Yorkshire Regt. (Green Howards) and was posted to France where he served for eighteen
months; this ended abruptly when he was killed in action six days into the
Somme Offensive. Again, he is remembered
on the Thiepval Memorial for those whose bodies were
never found.
