Jenkinson was raised at 16, Mitford Street by his parents Matthew Crimlisk Haxby and Elizabeth Ann Haxby.  He worked as a baker’s apprentice at Heptinstall’s bakery before becoming a fully qualified baker at the same shop until he joined up in late 1914.  He enlisted in Scarborough into the 2^nd Battalion, Yorkshire Regt. (Green Howards) and was posted to France where he served for eighteen months; this ended abruptly when he was killed in action six days into the Somme Offensive.  Again, he is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial for those whose bodies were never found.
