George William JENKINSON (93/DA, Deck Hand)

George William JENKINSON (93/DA, Deck Hand)

b. 1892, Filey  d. Mon. 16th Dec. 1918 (aged 26)

A fisherman, like so many of the other men in Filey at the time, George was aboard one of the fishing trawlers commandeered by the Royal Naval Reserve, the Falstaff, and was sent on minesweeping duties in the Mediterranean for most of the war.  This meant leaving his parents George and Priscilla Jenkinson behind at 5, Providence Place and only coming back to see them every few months when he and the rest of the crew could get leave.

On one such minesweeping operation just after peace had been declared, George was taken ill with pneumonia and taken to hospital in Malta where he died a few days later.  He was interred at Syra New British Cemetery, Cyclades.
