Francis David MARTIN (Sergeant)

Francis David MARTIN (Sergeant)

b. 1883, Filey  d. Wed. 21st Sep. 1917 (aged 34)

Son of the well known Filey man Edward Martin J.P., whom Martin’s ravine and the now demolished Martin’s Villa is named after, and who played a key roll in the development of Filey sea wall defences.  Francis emigrated from Filey to Australia in 1905 but was fondly remembered in Filey for being Filey Town Football Club’s star centre forward for a time, and in 1914 was one of the first citizens of Australia to volunteer for war service.  He joined up into the 29th Battalion, Australian Infantry Force and saw action at Gallipolli before being moved to Belgium on the Ypres – Salient.  This was to be his final resting place as he was killed in action, and is now remembered on the Menin Gate memorial.
