Alfred OSBORNE (28851, Private)

b. 1887, Bridlington       d. Thu. 3rd May 1917 (aged 30)

Alfred settled after marrying a local girl from Filey a few years before the war.  The couple had six children and his main profession was as a ‘general dealer’ throughout the town.  He did not join at the time of conscription as he became exempted by a local military tribunal on grounds of ‘family hardship’ should he be injured or killed whilst at the front.  These temporary exemptions were renewed in May and July 1916, but on September 8th 1916 he was denied exemption and told he was to join the Leicestershire Regt.  After training he was posted to the 6th Battalion in France, where he only survived for seven weeks before dying of wounds received during the Battle of Oppy Wood, the same battle and day  as David Fox.  He is buried in Cuckoo Passage Cemetery.
