Had grown up in Filey and owned a small business as a
carriage proprietor before the war. On
20th April 1907 he married Elizabeth Gash and they had a son, Albert
Charles, in 1912 at 4, Albion
Place, off Murray Street. These details in themselves are important, as
Elizabeth’s two brothers David and Edward were to be killed in the First World
War, whilst their son Albert was to die aged 30 (exactly the same as his
father) whilst serving as a gunner in 1942. It is hard to imagine for one woman
to suffer the loss of a husband, a son and two brothers throughout the two
wars.
Albert enlisted in Hull
into the Royal Field Artillery and was placed in 14th Battery, 4th Brigade, Royal
Field Artillery at the end of training.
He was sent to Mesopotamia in mid 1915
to serve with an Indian division and returned to Filey on leave in May 1916. He
was sent to France
shortly afterwards and died of wounds in Amara
Hospital Centre a month later. He was
buried in Amara
War Cemetery.
