As a Sergeant in the Hunts. Cyclists John had been in charge of many of the Hunts. Cyclists based around Filey, and he too married a local girl, Fanny Cammish on 25^th April 1916, just a short time before he was sent to France.   They were married in Trinity Methodist Church, and lived just around the corner at 15, Mitford Street.

He was posted to the 2^nd/4^th London Regt. (Royal Fusiliers) in late 1916 with several other Hunts. Cyclists, including Horace Bright where they died in the Battle of Menin Road in September 1917.
