John WEBB (318285, Corporal)

John WEBB (318285, Corporal)

b. 1889, Cambridge        d. Sun. 21st Aug. 1915 (aged 26)

Although his parents (John and Sarah Webb) lived in Burswell, Cambridge John lived in Filey and worked as the local postman for a while.  At the start of the war he gave this up and enlisted into one of the local territorial battalions, the 6th Yorkshire Regt. (Green Howards) and once they had completed training were sent out to the Dardanelles to reinforce the British forces at Gallipolli, like Tom Killingbreck.  This was on 7th August 1915, so within a fortnight John was declared K.I.A. (Killed In Action) and again, like Tom he is commemorated on the Helles Memorial.  The 6th Green Howards lost 600 men out of the 850 on the Gallipolli Peninsula on the 21stAugust as they advanced uphill towards a well prepared enemy.

A possible reason for John’s initial settling in Filey is that a John Webb, Confectioner lived and traded at 26, Sandhill Lane at this time (and had done for at least 10 years previous to this date) and it is likely that the two may have been related in one way or another, as these are the only Webbs in Filey.
