Coldplay Day finally arrived and it was well worth the suspense. Even though I had stopped "being excited" about it since the London trip was postponed, it had all seemed so surreal. Me and Pete in the same room as Coldplay discussing how Pete works with a bunch of Moms and sharing stories about being in a band (we had mentioned our high school band "Swerve" and they said it was a cool name). 2. 2:00pm We enter the room and Coldplay is there to shake our hands and we exchange names. Chris Martin then comes out and introduces himself. Surreal Moment. They offer us some sodas and we take them.
3. 2:05pm They give us autographs and we take some photos in front of a painting we start talking about. It was a picture of two fish swimming and 2 zippo lighters floating down towards the fish.
4. 2:10pm We head for the studio tour and watch them play cricket in the recording studio while discussing the secret to their magical music. Chris then teases us and says they will play a song for us.
5. 2:18pm They sit us down on some couches and that is when we realize that he meant "play a previously recorded song on audio playback." The song is a Johnny Cash cover song called "Kingdom Gone" and it was as good as you expect Coldplay to be. They offer us some Lifesavers and we take some. The drummer gives us each a pair of drumsticks he used on tour. This is probably because I talked to him the most.
6. 2:25pm Pete asks them to record his cellphone answering message and I figure I will cash in too. We asked them all (of course we only want the lead singer to do it) and Chris agrees.
7. 2:30pm I invite them to my Luau but no takers so off we went back to reality and back to work
Story 1: Right before they were about to play their brand new track, Chris Martin asks if we are going to "nick" anything. Since I speak English, I understood that he meant "bootlegging" but Pete did not. He responded with a "Yeah, I'm a big clutz."
Story 2: I figured it would be easier to talk to the drummer Will Champion because he was the only one I could understand clearly. I started talking to Chris Martin and figured it would be best not to talk to someone you might misunderstand
They play cricket in the recording studio
They order Sushi for lunch
They pay $2,000 a day for the studio out of pocket and then get reimbursed when they finish the record
They had the "Curb Your Enthusiasm" dvd title page on their television
They snack on peanuts and lifesavers
They plan on finishing the album in December and touring in January
They said they never forget a face, therefore we must look exactly like we do now when we see them in concert so we can get backstage
Story 1: When I first met them, they asked how we had won the prize, "Did you have to answer a trivia question or something?" I reply with a shameful, "I called in to win a DVD and they picked me out of a hat."
Story 2: Before we got there, we figured it would be a good idea to know their names so we can disguise ourselves as super fans
At one point we were all standing in a circle and that is when I realized how short I was. Those Coldplay dudes are at least 6 feet tall and Pete blended right in.

Closer... Hats off to KROCK to finally getting me half my prize. Now where is the rest of it? They still owe me a trip to London and they are not letting me change the name on the ticket. WLIR Former 92.7 would never pull this crap on me!
