Promise I'm still alive, I'll even upload a few more pictures when I get home from work today. Having a much better time here - I've finally found something useful to do with my time at work (though it does consist of Excel graphs and statistics and very little else). I've started my language lessons.. I've had two so far and can carry on a pretty basic greeting.. "hello, how are you, my name is..." That's something, I guess. I'd really like to get some more though! My father is comign in on Friday of this week, and we're going to a SA National Park called Madikwe so we can see animals. I'm really looking forward to it! I've had some interesting times here so far. I'm getting to be friends with a girl named Courtney. She's not Matswana, but she is a South African (she apparently speaks 12 SA languages!). 21 years old, and hasn't gone to college yet but plans to in order to study psychology. (Sounds good to me!). She and I do most of our work together. She's helping me collect the data I need because she can actually speak to the patients in the waiting room, and we also are the primary playmates for the kids. When the Summer really hits and it warms up here we're going to start taking them outside to play rather than sitting in the waiting room and being rambunctious. I have also been accosted by those of a religious bent... mainly in riding in combis, in fact. The other day someone asked if I went to church and I said no without thinking about it... which was followed by a long discussion on why not which culminated in "you don't believe in god?" "No." Followed by a *gasp* from all the people in the combi. And it was pretty crowded. Good thing I was getting off soon. I've missed the Hash for the past few weeks because I can't find it!!! So frustrating.. But hopefully I've got a ride tonight and I'll be able to run underneath the big blue crisp sky. So - there's a lot more but my hands are getting tired of typing (I've been finishing a proposal all morning) and I'll write more later.. hopefully it won't take three weeks this time? Love to everyone and give me a yell if you read this. |
Friends in Kanye Gorge
This is Kanye Gorge again - the two people are Peter and Manisha. Peter is an NYU law student working at a local public aid firm, and Manisha is a Duke med student who works with me at the Baylor Clinic. |
Going Home that Night
Sunset out the rear window as we were heading home from our drive that night. |
The Big Daddy Lion
While my dad and I were in Madikwe National Park (in South Africa) we saw quite a few animals! The first afternoon we went out we came across this guy and five members of his family lying out in the sun. |
