Road Trip

Back to Writing

Warning!  This story contains implied yaoi (gay) relationships between male characters (Hakkai/Gojyo).

Disclaimer: The characters in this story are the property of various entities who own the rights to Saiyuki.  This is a work of fanfiction and an expression of my love for this wonderful anime series.  It was my first fanfic.

Gojyo had been standing in the doorway for an hour, watching the clouds wring out the last of the week’s rain and blue sky break through.  Hakkai glanced at him for the dozenth time as he went about cleaning the small house, puzzled at his lover’s long silence.  Over the past week the redhead had cast aside his normally cheerful and boisterous manner for one that grew more morose by the day, till now he simply stood in the doorway watching the sky in silence.  Finally Hakkai dried his hands and came to stand behind the taller man, at a loss for something to say which would breach the gulf.

The quiet grew between them until Gojyo finally broke it.  “Rain’s gone.” he said in a flat, carefully colorless tone.

“Yes…it is.” replied the scholar, mystified by the statement of the obvious.

Tossing his cigarette into the puddle at the doorstep, Gojyo glanced back over his shoulder, his eyes hooded.  “I guess you’ll be going, then.  The priest said you’d get started west once the rain let up.”

Hakkai felt something in his gut clench, right behind the fresh scar that transected his belly.  …what?  Then, like a wash of cool water he understood.  He felt a terrible sadness for his friend, so uncertain he was wanted.  Choosing his words with care, but making his tone nonchalant, the brunette slipped his arms around Gojyo’s slender waist and asked, “Do you need any help packing your things?”

Tension leeched out of the body he held, and the redhead’s voice sounded almost normal again.  “Nah.  I can be ready to go any time you are.”
