AMTGARD is a medieval recreation club founded in El Paso in February 1983 by James Harren, aka Sir Peter Le Grue. Our founder left after the first three months of play, and Ben Passmore (Gilos Dawnhope), Sammy Snoddy (Nashomi) and I (Tawnee Darkfalcon), continued to lead the club. With the help of Mandy Burgin (Joella Starwatcher), we rewrote the rulebook to eliminate portions which were similar to other clubs, and worked to develop a stable organization. We started out with only a handful of members, but by the mid-1990's, the local group had a regular weekly attendance of over 100. When members moved away, they took the spirit of AMTGARD with them, and started groups in their new areas. Soon, AMTGARD had spread throughout the United States and even in other parts of the world. The founding group here in El Paso is named Kingdom of the Burning Lands. Lately, I have been traveling to Las Cruces, New Mexico to play in the Kingdom of Dragonspine. As far as I know, I am the only one of the founding members still active on a weekly basis any more, but we all still support the club and look back fondly on the good times we enjoyed fighting, carousing, and stepping outside the confines of our mundane lives through AMTGARD.
