Vampire A/U

Outline: Demons, werewolves, vampires, and witches, oh my! The world, unbeknownst to most of the human population, is home for all of the above and then some. An organization known as the Watchers keep tabs on all of the supernatural beings of the world, making sure that they live in relative harmony with the rest of the occupants. If one of them gets too out of hand, they’re sent in to put a stop to it, one way or another. However, demon activity has been picking up lately, and the Watchers fear the worst: someone is trying to reopen the Gateway. The Gateway is a portal that can open the doorways between the three worlds: This world, Earth; the next world, limbo and the afterlife; and hell, place of eternal suffering and damnation. They do not have the task force to handle such anarchy, not with every demon, vampire, nymph, werewolf and every other creature imaginable trying to help open the Gateway. They use whatever magic they can muster and summon six creatures to help them fight. Unlike all the others that plague the night, these specific creatures have one thing in common: they’ve been cursed with a conscience and a soul. Because they have an underlying desire to do good, and with their demonic powers still intact, the Watchers hope that they’ll prove force enough to ensure the Gateway stays closed…forever. Because once it’s opened, there’s only one way to seal it, and the only person that knows how is the one that wants it opened.

Caden

Age: predates humankind

Species: Ancient

History: Her species is that of the original demons that plagued the Earth, long before humans were even a thought. Powerful and violent, they almost destroyed the world with their constant fighting. Caden managed to trick them into a hell dimension and seal it shut behind them, making sure that they could never escape and prevent her from being the ultimate dark force on the planet. However, she went into hiding until the late 16th century, figuring it wasn’t worth her effort trying to rule over Neanderthals and monkeys. When she came back though, she was known as the scourge of mankind, a plague upon humanity and the demons of the world alike. The Ancients are powerful demons with a multitude of powers unbeknownst to most, and have the ability to appear as something other than their true form (which she only takes on when she’s pissed), and in her “human” form, looks like a vampire because of her pale skin and fangs and her ability to see in total darkness. Because of the resemblance, she is often mistaken for a Vampire, and rather than reveal she is the last of the Ancients, she lets it slide. However, her nature is violent, she lives to destroy things and people, and nothing makes her happier than another’s pain. She is cruel and manipulative, putting even Jack the Ripper to shame with her wave of destruction. While the others have no idea, Caden was the one that tried to open the Gateway ten years earlier, but was interrupted by the Watchers and captured. Since them, she’s basically been locked in the Watchers’ basement, waiting for her chance to be released upon the world again.

Caprice

Age: 450 years

Species: Vampire

History: A more traditional vampire, Caprice clings to the city underworlds, where there are plenty of easy meals and no risk of sunlight. She looks like a raven, and thus was aptly named and referred to by most demons and mortals. She spends most of her time in the seedy underground of cities, such as LA and New York, where she doesn’t have to care where her meals come from. In her day she was pretty a badass vampire, disposing of almost as many Watchers and Hunters as Caden. For a while, the two hung around together until their differences finally split them up. Whereas Caden is manipulative to the point of mind control, Caprice is beyond physically destructive, killing her victims brutally and slowly. She takes almost as fun in destroying them as she does feeding off of them. Unlike Caden, she has moral rules about what she uses for meals, such as no children or mothers. Everyone else is fair game.

Indigo

Age: 26 years

Species: Witch

History: A mortal, Indigo is one of the more powerful witches of her time, mastering white magic and steadily learning more in the black arts. She’s not necessarily evil, but she does have quite a temper on her and if someone pissed her off, she has no qualms about getting rid of them, magical means or not. She mainly uses the black arts for revenge, but she also uses it for protection from the creatures of the night. As she is a mortal, she doesn’t have to worry about Watchers keeping tabs on her, and being a witch is technically still a human occupation, she doesn’t have a lot of the restrictions as the others, such as sunlight, moonlight, or having to worry about necromancers. Of course, it also puts a damper on some other things, like Caden and Caprice’s extraordinary agility and the others’ immortality. She has to be more cautious in fights, unlike the others, but her knowledge of magic is beyond belief and seems to have a natural ability to control it.

Lore

Age: 120 year

Species: Werewolf

History: Not necessarily immortal, she’s not mortal either, a subject that continually drives her nuts. She ages much more slowly than humans, but ages nevertheless. Her transformations do not require the moon, but when the full moon is out, she automatically transforms the moment the light touches her flesh. Unlike the Vampires, she is not compelled to feast on humans, or to bite them to turn them into werewolves. She can eat and behave like a normal human being, though prone to growling more than most people. She is another that can walk freely in the sunlight, though has to be somewhat leery of the phases of the moon. A lot like Caprice, she’s physically violent, and an impressive fighting force once enraged. In her wolf form, she lacks the ability to speak, so she often ignores communications during fights, which can sometimes land her in even more trouble.

Deidra

Age: Timeless

Species: wood nymph

History: Flighty by nature, she is neither wholly good, nor wholly evil. She likes to play tricks and pranks on unsuspecting people, be they human or not. She’s especially cruel to people who harm her forest, such as loggers or litterbugs, and for some unknown reason, Boy Scouts. She has the capability to change size and shape, but she’s never really the size of a full-grown human, or anything too large. She sticks with flowers and saplings, and the occasional third-grader. Being a wood nymph also gives her an innate sense of the woods and its creatures, not to mention a certain level of control. She can get a tree to lift its roots to trip someone up, or a thorn bush to reach out and snag someone’s passing clothing.

Devin

Age: 300 years

Species: vampire

History: Once a friend of Caden and Caprice, she roamed the Western world with them on their two-hundred year killing spree. However, around the nineteenth century, they split up, and Devin headed towards the Orient, where people were still highly superstitious and had no legends of her kind and therefore lived without fear of getting killed. Unfortunately, or fortunately, depending on how one looks at it, she became rather fond of the people, and not as a meal. She actually gave up on feeding on people (unless it was dire straits or they were one of the seedier people) and began feeding on animals to live from a day-to-day basis. However, once she arrived in the Americas, she decided she didn’t like the people as much and now feeds without regard. She was always a little scared of Caden, as when she was running with her and Caprice, the Demon was and the verge of losing her mind. Now that she’s loose again, Devin thinks she’s got a 50/50 chance of being mostly harmless or dangerously psychotic, and is unsure whether or not to trust her former mentor.

Quinn

Age: Timeless

Species: Water Demon

History: Inherently evil, just like Caprice and Caden, she loves to cause trouble for people near the water. Such mishaps include flooding, drowning, and using sea creatures to attack mortals and demons alike. She doesn’t discriminate between good and evil, just as long as she gets to screw with their head before they die. She actually prefers not to kill people, preferring instead the fun of making them terrified of all things water for the rest of their lives. She can take either the shape of a human (with slightly blue-tinged skin), or water. It leaves her room to sneak about, underneath doors and through keyholes. Unfortunately, due to the nature of being, if left outside of water for a long time, she starts to dehydrate and evaporate. She also hates being out in the sunlight because of the heat and the water loss that comes with.

Sam

Age: 27

Species: Human/Seer

History: An exiled Watcher, Sam is shunned by both sides of the war. The Watchers got rid of him because of his increasing visions because while he could generally figure out what they meant, they weren’t always one hundred percent accurate. Unlike most natural seers, he wasn’t born with the ability, nor did his visions come on demand. The always left him with debilitating headaches, and when he almost botched the whole mission keeping the Gateway closed from Caden, the Watchers threw him out. The supernatural world doesn’t trust him because of what he was, and the humans don’t trust him because of what he has become. When he tries to warn the Watchers about someone trying to reopen the Gateway, they ignore him and his is forced to try and find someone else to help hi. Somebody with powers beyond that of a normal human. He meets up Indigo and they manage to gather a group of various demons, who while not wanting to do good necessarily, all agree that they don’t want an absolute ruler over the Gateway.

Caden laughed, her smile baring her pointed canines. “Look at me!” She held her arms out, waiting to be inspected. “Do I look like I have a conscience? I am Death!”

“Ahh, I see.” Sam shifted his glasses further up on his nose. “So, um, you all have your souls back?”

Caden and Caprice bared their teeth and snarled.

“Ignore them,” Devin said as the professor jumped. “They like to pretend they don’t, but they’re cursed, just like the rest of us.”

“Cursed? Ha!” Caden spat. “I see little difference.”

Caden yawned apathetically. “I feel I should warn you now. I really don’t give a shit what you do to them. No matter what they’ve told you, I have no soul. And I have no conscience.”

“We’ll see about that,” Madison said, reaching over and grabbing a hot poker. She waved the glowing metal in front of the vampire’s face.

Caden didn’t even blink. “Dude, I’ve been to Hell. Lovely place, really. So if you think your little poker is going to do much, I suggest you rethink things.”

“You talk a lot for a vampire. You know what I think?” Madison said, smirking.

“Sorry, can’t force my mind that far into the gutter,” Caden shot back.

“I think you really are afraid. Maybe not for them, but for yourself. I think you are afraid of pain.”

Caden’s smirk pressed into a grim, deadly line. In the blink of an eye, she grasped the glowing orange end of the heated poker, wrapping her fingers around it. Her face didn’t change in the slightest. Her flesh began to burn, the wretched stench of burning skin rising with the smoke.

“Jesus Christ!” Madison whispered, then shouted. She finally managed to rip the poker away from the vampire, who was smiling sadistically. “You really are fucking crazy!”

“Crazy?” Caden repeated softly, flexing the burned skin of her hand. “I was crazy once…”
