The course is land, sea, and air, ranging from the rock climbing, and motocross, to surfing and wakeboarding, to hang gliding and free-style skydiving. It also includes both summer and winter sports. The summer competition is held in Monterey Bay, California, and the winter sports are held three months later in Denver, Colorado. The contest is no holds barred, and it isn’t an official sport. It is an underground competition, open for only those who have showed dedication to the sports themselves instead of the money and sponsorships. The teams are made up of less than ten people ideally, and no more than two competitors from each team are allowed to compete in one area. However, you must have at least one in every competition. There are no tracks, except for motocross, skateboarding, and inline skating. The climbing is done freestyle on actual mountains, and the BMX biking, skiing, snow mobiling, snowboarding, are done on slopes dotted with trees and other natural hazards, as well as a few manmade ones. The skiing and snowboarding are done on specific runs down the mountain, and the scores are based on time, maneuverability, and stunts. Snow mobiling and BMX biking are done on natural trails, and scores are based on the same three qualities as the skiing and snowboarding. Motocross and inline skating have two different competitions: a race, and a stunt category. The race is down a street/hill that isn’t blocked off from normal traffic, and the trick category is in an official arena. The motocross race is on a dirt track through the woods that used to be an old logging trail, and a second race is on a normal circular track. The stunts are done one at a time on a straight shot track with one jump on it. The water and air sports are all done in a supervised area, and are strictly based on stunts. The war also has a section of self-defense, including all styles of karate, from bo staff demonstrations, to swords, to hand-to-hand combat.
Caprice Damaret: Veteran motocross and snowboard competitor, she is one of the best female participants, though a little reckless and notorious for being violent on the playing field. She needs a new team for the upcoming all-out Sports war in order to participate. Her old racing crowd wasn’t invited and she had planned on leaving anyway. Caprice is feared because of her track record as almost undefeated, and pummeling the hell out of anyone that makes a mockery of her or her style in her chosen sports. Caprice has been competing since her early teens; mostly in small circuits to avoid the overly publicized ESPN covered exhibitions. She handpicked the other six while scouting the local circuits in an effort to find the right “somebody” to join her team. Each of her teammates contributes something different to the team, and together they should be unbeatable.
Lore Weaver: A long time friend of Devin, she joined the team on request from both Devin and Caprice. She doesn’t compete in the more violent of the sports, or what people would consider “Extreme”. Lore is an excellent martial artist, a black belt in Kung Fu, and a gymnast. She’s participated in both since she was a young kid and until recently, didn’t compete in the national level. Her family is supportive of her career and help whenever they can, and she was supposed to go to the Olympics last year, but broke a wrist while practicing. Though out of commission for several months, she is now more than ready to participate in the upcoming Sports War.
Devin Hesketh: A relative newcomer to the racing scene, she has a natural affinity for sports, especially the wall climbing. She became interested in it when she started working at a local climbing gym and was coached by the owner when he realized her potential to become one of the greats. She has just recently discovered the joys of competition in X-Treme sports and has become an addict. Devin also is extremely gifted in the arts of self-defense, her specialty lying in the area of bo staffs and hand-to-hand. She began training on the karate scene when she was four and has risen steadily through the ranks to third degree black belt in the Shaolin Kempo style. Caprice picked her out at one of the karate demonstrations near to a wall climbing gym, where Caprice had been scouting for a climber. Imagine her surprise when she found a two-in-one deal. Devin immediately joined, knowing of Caprice’s reputation as a leader who didn’t take crap from others and nothing short of the best from her teammates.
Quinn Roswell: An expert wake boarder, she has been practicing since she could swim and competing almost as long. However, like Caprice, clung mostly to the less broadcasted circuits, competing mostly for the fun of it and learning new tricks from some of the older competitors. Quinn is also extremely young for her level of expertise on the water, as well as her capabilities on the ski slopes. She mastered skiing while in grade school, the sport a recreational hobby instead of something she competed in. Caprice first met Quinn while surfing off the coast of Hawaii several years ago, and she, remembering the unique talent Quinn held on the water, invited her to join the rapidly growing team for the Sports War. Quinn accepted graciously and joined Devin and Caprice.
Deidra Mathony: Literally dropped in on Caprice and the others while they were training. Deidra specializes in hang gliding, and landed on the team’s practicing ground since it was the nearest open space (not to mention she’d lost track of where she was and needed to stop for directions). Despite her tendency to space out while flying, Deidra had a natural elegance in the air, seemingly soaring as effortlessly as the birds. Upon explanation, Caprice also discovered Deidra had an uncanny knack for clipper racing, almost as ease on the waves as she was in the air. Deidra never competed however, and Caprice had to call upon a few favors to get Deidra into the Sports War, which Deidra obligingly agreed to. However, Deidra’s main reason for joining the competition wasn’t for the sake of challenge, instead viewing it as a valuable lesson on what tricks she could learn or try on her own free time.
Indigo Dionne: An addition suggested by Quinn and Deidra, she participates in BMX biking and snow mobiling, sports she picked up as a teenager and only recently began competing in. She prefers the events requiring some sort of protection, like helmets and guards, since her bones seem to break easier than most other peoples’. She also participates in the sports more for money, since she cannot afford anything without someone sponsoring her, and she’d rather make money doing something she loves instead of quitting and getting a real job. She does quite well at the obstacle courses, though decidedly reckless in some cases, and unlike the others prefers the TV coverage of ESPN. Indigo is still a gifted driver, and upon the recommendation of Quinn and Deidra, Caprice invited her to join the team.
Caden O’Connell: A sort of myth that circulates around the X-Treme sports ring, she’s at the same level as Caprice. A veteran player, Caden is about to retire. She’s become jaded; sick of the crap that people pull to win something she sees as a friendly competition instead of all out war. Nevertheless, despite her view of the sportsmanship exhibited by the newcomers to the tracks, she still loves participating in snowboarding and climbing, though her true talent lies in inline skating. She’s an adrenaline junkie, and no angel either when it comes to competing either; she’s been known to get into fights and even start riots at competitions. Her short temper has even cost her several nights in jail. However, her reputation is that she can pull stunts on the track that defy the laws of physics and nature, seemingly bending them to her will: “the girl without fear” (or common sense). She competes with daring and tenacity, two qualities that have given her the edge over the years. Caden and Caprice met on a circuit when Caden was still new to the X-Treme world, and Caprice knew that Caden could manipulate the tracks with ease borne to that of a natural. Caden knew Caprice’s standing in the sports, and agreed to participate in the Sports War as a final event before leaving the competition forever.
