California's First Theatre

This house, built in 1844 by Jack Swan was a saloon and a sailor's boarding house for about two years. Minstrel shows and dramatic performances began in 1847 at the close of the Mexican War when soldiers persuaded Jack Swan to permit them to convert the building into the Union Theater.
