Hikes from Arroyo Seco

Arroyo Seco Campground

Arroyo Seco Campground is a big, well maintained campground. It fills up during the summer month. You can make reservations online at reserveamerica.com.

For trail reports and everything else you ever wanted to know about the Ventana Wilderness, check Ventana Wilderness Alliance.

Rocky Creek Trail

This trail connects Arroyo Seco Camp with Rocky Ridge Camp. First, it leads along a ridge and offers great views down at the Arroyo Seco River. Then it curves into Rocky Creek Canyon. From here on, you will get your feet wet. The trail crosses Rocky Creek a couple of times. Some guide books say six times, others say nine times. I don't know which one is right because I turned around after the fifth crossing. The path is sometimes hard to find and after about three miles, I couldn't find it anymore.

From Arroyo Seco Camp . . .

. . . along the ridge . . .

. . . into Rocky Creek Canyon.

Part one, up the hill and along the ridge was easy and beautiful.

Then, the trail started criss-crossing the creek . . . . . . and Bernd really wasn't sure about this . . .

. . . Neither was I. I crossed the creek a couple more times, but then, I lost it. Do you see a trail here? I dont. . . .

Indians Road

Indians Road is a dirt road, connecting Arroyo Seco Camp with Indians Station and Santa Lucia Memorial Park Camp in the south of the Ventana Wilderness. The road is open only for a couple of months in summer and even then you should think carefully before using it.

Most of the way, the road closely follows the Arroyo Seco River, offering breathtaking views into the canyon.

Horse Bridge

About three miles south of Arroyo Seco Camp is the trailhead to Marble Peak Trail. Hiking the whole trail would take a while, but getting down into the canyon to cross the river at Horse Bridge only takes a couple of minutes and is absolutely worth it.
