Sequoia National Forest, 2005

Sequoia National Forest is of course named after the Giant Sequoias and most famous for its "Trail of 100 Giants", a grove of 125 of these trees.

Other interesting places in the forest are Lake Isabella and the Kern River.

Adjacent to the National Forest are Sequoia National Park and Giant Sequoia National Monument.

For more information about this forest, check the
USDA Forest Service website.

Joshua Trees in the Sierra

So far, all I've seen of this forest is the part along highway 178 on my way from Monterey to Death Valley and back. No Sequoias here, but lots of Joshua Trees and in early April 2005, they were still covered in snow.

Two days later, on our way back, the snow was gone and the Joshua Trees were quite spectacular.

Lake Isabella

This reservoir on the Kern River is one of the largest in southern California, covering more than 17 square miles.

Rinsing off layers of desert sand. Bernd can't swim, but, of course, he was watching.

Kern River

The Kern is a fairly "dammed" river and it is hart to find parts that are still in its natural stage. But somewhat south of Lake Isabella, we got lucky.

And here is Ken, trying to get his feet all the way into the river . . .

. . . OK, the last picture is a fake, but it was close.
