COURSE NUMBER COURSE NAME DESCRIPTION REFLECTIONS
COM 516 Professional Communications Topics include oral and written communication, methods for finding and evaluating course resources, critical thinking, the purpose and use of portfolios, program standards, stress and time management, and Learning Team processes. Great beginning class. Most of the skills I developed online were introduced here.
EDTC 510 Foundations of Distance Education and Training The history, technologies, philosophies, and best practices associated with distance learning will be presented and analyzed. Current and future critical issues that impact the teaching/learning environment in distance delivery modalities also will be examined. I began to see that one's philosophy does not necessarily equate to one's practices. The concept of holistic application is introduced. We are to try to please all of the people - if we can.
EDD 511 Adult Learning: Theories, Principles, and Applications Major theories of adult learning and how they relate to instructional practices will be explored. Intelligence, learning styles, and motivation are discussed in the context of teaching adult learners. Introduced to gerantagogy. Life-long learning has a new "division".
CURR 524 Instructional Design Specific focus will be given to the creation of materials appropriate for adult learners in classrooms and learning at a distance, including attention to life experiences, entry level skills, motivational needs, and modes of delivery. This course introduced me to the possibility of another direction for the training I am receiving: Instructional Designer.
EDTC 526 Assessment and Evaluation in e-Education Interpretation of assessment data, strategies for tracking student progress, and communication of results based on clear criteria and standards will be presented. Critical assessment issues facing distance education programs will be analyzed and debated. I have been "designing" my assessments for 20+ years based on what was being done and understood in my classes. What I had been doing [both correctly and incorrectly] by instinct was explained to me.
QNT 540 Research and Ethics in e-Education This course is an overview of the fundamentals of research and statistics. Ethical issues related to research, including basic theory and practice, professional codes of ethics, governmental regulations, and confidentiality are addressed. Course served two purposes: 1) To remind me I'm not as 'smart' as I think, and 2) ethics - like most important things, has shadings that are infused with societal misconceptions and perceptions.
EDTC 550 Information Technology The course will explain the roles of information systems, systems development, operating systems and programming, relational databases, networking concepts, and the Internet. I was 'introduced' to the business side of education. This foreign territory is not so alien anymore.
EDTC 555 Internet and Distance Education Delivery The course will focus on effective instructional strategies in distance education. Both asynchronous and synchronous deliveries will be explored. An emphasis will be placed upon Internet delivery and Internet course management solutions. Bottom line: If the course does not meet the learners' needs - both educationally and temperamentally - why did you design it? More importantly, what good is the design?
EDTC 560 Applications of Multimedia and Web Page Design This course focuses on the elements of multimedia, the principles of Web-page design, and the integration of multimedia. This is what I've told myself is my raison d'être. The jury's still out as to my eventual success.
EDTC 570 Courseware Authoring This course examines the processes and approaches using courseware to design and develop learning objects. Design and implementation. Should prove interesting to see how I have evolved from CURR 524.
EDTC 570 e-Education in the Global Environment Students will study political and cultural issues that impact education and its delivery through distance education modalities. If we are moving toward a true global information system, it is necessary to know how the other contributors 'think'.
EDTC 590 e-Education Capstone This course is an exercise in the practical application of new knowledge learned so that students exiting the program will be proficient in constructing courses and rich learning environments for effective multimedia instruction with a variety of learners. I think this is where I get the opportunity to display what I have learned. My version 1.01 of my online course?
