Demons...pure and simple…well not so pure or simple. The Oni is the native race of Neatherrealm and can come in almost any shape or form. Some are almost human in appearance where as others completely bestial. This is not the most notable aspect of the Oni, the fact that members of other races can become Oni is. A fallen soul imprisoned in the Neatherrealm can become an Oni by many paths. A powerful sorcerer, high ranking Oni or one of the Fallen Gods can change a dark soul into a demon. Almost all Oni have an evil alignment, there are a rare few that are neutral and even rarer who are good. The so-called good Oni will always try to find a way to purify themselves in order to ascend to a non-demon state. This is almost unheard of and there is only one Oni in recent years that fills this description: Ashra.
There are basically five types of Oni. The most numerous but rarely seen outside of the Neatherrealm is the Beast Oni. These are basically demons with horns and maybe tails with or without batwings. Their intelligence is on par with most humans but their viciousness even among themselves is down right bloody. Then you have your Scholar Oni, these are Oni that for some reason have taken on human appearance and live within walled cities separating them from Horned Oni. They are often seen studying the dark arts or having power plays among themselves. Tortured Oni are often the tortured souls of mortals or are Fallen Gods, whose hatred and need for revenge have changed them in to creatures of great power. Sadly, more often than not, they have forgotten as to why they are so tortured due to their transformation. Strangely enough, it is the Tortured Oni that can last the longest outside of the Neatherrealm. Brotherhood of Shadows…yes every single member of the Brotherhood is an Oni but not only that almost every one of them was once a mortal soul that was sent to the Neatherrealm due to the evil they had committed while alive. Each one of them was recruited and change either by Shinnok or one of his Dukes. They are second only to the Tortured Oni when it comes to lasting outside of the Neatherrealm. Last and fewest in number is Quan Chi’s Oni. For centuries, the sorcerer Quan Chi has been creating his own type of Oni from the damned souls of women. In return he expects complete and total obedience from them, but a rare few have been known to rebel. All have paid the price.
