My Summary For as long as anyone could remember, the world had been seperated into four nations. They were Air, Water, Earth, and Fire. There was a balance of power between them that went undisturbed thanks to the power and influence of the Avatar. Each nation has it's share of Benders. Benders are people who can control the element under which they live. The best Benders who know everything about their element are called Masters. The Avatar is the master of all the elements, no matter which one he/she was born under. During one cycle in the Avatar's life, he vanishes. With the Avatar gone the Fire Nation siezes their chance to finally rule the world. It turns out the next Avatar was to be a 12 year old Airbender named Aang. He normally would not have been told of his fate to be the next Avatar until he turned 16 but the monks sensed that war was approaching. Aang ran away on his flying bisson named, Appa. In the process the two got trapped in a violent storm which brought them out of the air and into the ocean. Aang tried to save them by encasing them in an air pocket but the pocket froze over and they became trapped. A hundred years later the two are discoverd by Katara and Sokka. They are siblings and members of the local Water Tribe at the South Pole. Katara and Sokka protect Aang from the Fire Nation which, by now, has almost completely taken over the world. Once word of the Avatar's return had gotten out, many Firebenders have gone on the hunt for him. It is now Aang's destiny to balance the power among the four nations and restore peace to the war torn world. He must travel the globe and find Masters of every art of bending to teach him their skill. Aang, with the help of Katara, Sokka, Appa, and his pet lemur, Momo, get closer to their ultimate goal of global peace every day. Book 1, Chapter 1 Opening By Katara Water, Earth, Fire, Air. My grandmother used to tell me stories about the old days. A time of peace when the Avatar kept a balance between Water Tribes, Earth Kingdom, Fire Nation, and Air Nomads. But that all changed when Fire Nation attacked. Only the Avatar, master of all four elements. Only he could stop the ruthless Firebenders. But when the world needed him most, he vanished. A hundred years have passed and the Fire Nation is nearing victory in the war. Two years ago, my father and the men of my tribe journeyed to the Earth Kingdom to help fight against the Fire Nation, leaving me and my my brother to look after our tribe. Some people believe that the Avatar was never reborn into the Air Nomads and that the cycle is broken. But I haven't lost hope. I still believe that somehow the Avatar will return to save the world. Book 1, Chapter 2 Opening By Katara Water, Earth, Fire, Air. Long ago, the four nations lived together in harmony. Then, everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked. Only the Avatar, master of all four elements could stop them. But when the world needed him most, he vanished. A hundred years passed and my brother and I discovered the new Avatar, an Airbender named Aang. And although his Airbending skills are great, he has a lot to learn before he's ready to save anyone. But I believe Aang can save the world.
