Ok, time for me to put my two cents in about this whole Imus thing. From everything I've heard, this Imus guy is kind of a dipshit. I remember him getting into trouble a couple years ago about some shit he said to Clinton at some fund raising dinner or some damn thing. So now he's gone and called the Rutgers women's basketball team a bunch of "nappy-headed hos." Stupid thing to say. Ok, are we clear on that? He's a moron.
But then...he apologized. He admitted he was wrong, he recanted the statement and went to Rutgers personally to do so.
Is that the act of a racist, or just a dipshit shock-jock who got carried away by the sound of his own voice?
Personally, I would suggest it is the later.
And the thing that I don't understand is how all these assholes who call themselves "reverend" (which I only assume means they are trying to establish some sort of connection to Christ) refuse to pardon him (because that is basically the foundation of all of Christ's teachings).
This whole situation is just ugly exploitation and Al Sharpton is using the Rutgers basketball team for his own agenda just as much as anyone else. I think that's bullshit.
I mean, seriously, don't you think we'd live in a lot better culture if people like Imus could stick their foot in their mouths and then say, "whoops, I'm sorry, I didn't mean that" and the people on the other side would say, "well, we didn't like what you said, but it's OK, just try not to do it again?" Why is it that somebody makes some stupid comment and then they are excluded from civilization for the rest of their natural lives? What is gained by that? It's not a display of tolerance. It's just being needlessly vengeful and I think it's a step backwards.
It's getting to be the case that everybody is a racist, or a misogynist, or a homophobe, or any other of a whole series of words which, once the label has been applied, make it perfectly acceptable for people to treat you with the worst form of prejudice. Now, if we were talking about hood wearing hillbillies that burned bibles and crosses and lynched people, no amount of prejudice would be enough. But once a phrase like "racist" is used just to downsize elderly employees who couldn't otherwise be released, this whole thing starts stinking of serious corruption.
I mean, come on, how about a legal definition of what is a "racist?" The term is too fucking ambiguous, and I think this is irresponsible considering the damage being publicly labeled as a racist can create. Shit, you should be able to sue somebody for calling you that if they can't prove it is true.
Now, if Imus had been inciting listeners to violence against the Rutgers basketball team, then his release would have been justified. But please, there's no law against being an idiot. Don't you think Al Sharpton could do the black community a lot more good by demanding that CBS set up a bunch of college funds for impoverished black children, instead of just vindictively getting somebody fired? Hell, he should have asked Imus to do that. But he's just pimping for media attention...and I suppose now that I said that I'm just a racist and people are justified to commit acts of violence against me?
The world is fucked up.
