Plot Summary: Star Trek: First Contact

Star Trek: First Contact, a film directed by Jonathan Frakes

The Federation is under attack. Its most threatening enemy, the Borg, attack deep space outposts on their way to Earth where they aim to assimilate the planet.

Captain Picard, the sub-space, intergalactic space hero, who commands the crew of the Federation’s flagship NCC-1701-E, has been ordered to remain in the Neutral Zone because Federation Admirals fear Picard cannot command the Enterprise effectively against the Borg (years ago the Borg assimilated Picard into their non-human, cybernetic collective).

Against orders, Picard follows the Borg to Earth where he destroys their “mother-ship.” A small vessel escapes it, creates a time rift in Earth’s atmosphere and enters Earth’s past in order to assimilate humanity on what is now a pre-Federation planet. As a result, the future (Picard’s present) will be a Borg, not human, future.

Picard and the Enterprise crew chase the Borg into Earth’s past, destroying the Borg vessel, but not before the Borg secretly transport their Queen and her drones to the shield-less Starfleet ship (time travel has its consequences!)

The crew must fight for their ship and for all of humanity when they discover they have reached Earth before humankind’s first contact with Vulcans (who later spawn Spock:“live long and prosper”). First contact is an event that changes the course of Earth’s history, as it triggers the unity of humankind, the formation of the Federation, and star treks: the noble and enlightened future as Picard et al know it.

If Picard and his crew cannot resist and destroy the Borg, humanity will come to an end. But, as any Trekker knows: “Resistance is futile!”
