History: Stephen Strange was a brilliant but arrogant neurosurgeon whose career was cut short when a car accident resulted in nerve damage to his hands. Thereafter, he was unable even to hold a scalpel. Hoping for a miracle, a despondent Strange traveled to the Himalayas to seek the counsel of the Ancient One, a Tibetan sorcerer. As the Ancient One's guest, Strange learned that the sorcerer's pupil, Baron Mordo, was plotting to kill his mentor. Attempting to warn the Ancient One of his student's treachery, Strange was discovered by Mordo and mystically restrained.

Witnessing Mordo's power and uncovering his murderous intent shocked the jaded Strange into a realization of evil's true nature and the need to combat its forces. The Ancient One freed Strange from Mordo's spell and revealed he had known of his student's treacherous plans all along. Having peered into Strange's soul, the sorcerer saw the wayward doctor's potential for great goodness and power, and adopted him as his disciple. When Strange's studies with the Ancient One reached an end, he returned to New York. Though the world at large believes he is no more than an eccentric occult authority, Dr. Strange has defended Earth from an assortment of mystical menaces and godlike entities -- all the while working diligently to strengthen the barriers between our world and any number of other hostile realms.

As Strange's skills grew, so did his challenges. One of his toughest tests came when he encountered the other-dimensional being known as Dormammu, Eater of Souls, whose magic was thought to be more powerful than both the Ancient One and Strange. Transcending his perceived limitations, Strange single-handedly defeated the Dread One -- gaining widespread respect throughout the mystical dimensions, but incurring Dormammu's eternal wrath. In the process, Strange acquired a new Cloak of Levitation and the all-seeing Eye of Agamotto. When the Ancient One died, Strange inherited from his mentor the mantle of Earth's Sorcerer Supreme.

Following the destruction of his Sanctum Sanctorum, the Master of the Mystic Arts went into hiding. He created two ethereal constructs, "Strange" and "Dr. Stevens," dispatching them to accumulate as many Earthly talismans and amulets as possible. Surfacing with a new guise and new powers, he prevented the birth of the chaos-demon Chthon, one of the elder gods. During the War of the Seven Spheres, Strange reclaimed his original garments and was restored to full power.

He has since rebuilt his Sanctum Sanctorum and is a consulting archmage with Danse Macabre, ready to assist them should they need it.
