Descriptive Essay

This is an essay I wrote for English 2. We had to describe a person. The person I described's name has been omitted for privacy except for the first letter. (Written 9/6/99)

If ever there was a good friend, it would have to be A-- T--. Yes, this 5’8” person with a wonderful personality sure has made a difference to me. She always seems to maintain a positive attitude toward situations. Even after her back surgery, the look of humor in her blue eyes hardly dimmed. A-- even continues to listen to me blather on about things I’ve talked about a hundred times before; and she still seems interested!

A--’s sense of humor sure is something! Even when she tries not to, she just seems to be joke-prone. Almost always she can make light of a situation and put things into perspective. For example, one time she was talking to one of her friends that worked in a grocery store. Normally A--’s friend worked in the meat department, but he told her he also worked in produce. Now A-- saw him later while he was sorting fruits and vegetables and asked him why he wasn’t working in produce. The friend was quite confused. After a bit of discussion they figured out that A-- had misunderstood and had thought meat was produce! As you can imagine, she was more than a little embarrassed about this, but she still tells the story with a grin.

Besides her sense of humor, A-- is also very understanding of others’ feelings. When we were in 8th grade we had the same P.E. class, and the class had to run outside. While we were running I accidentally tripped her and she fell and bashed her knee. I apologized profusely, of course. She assured me she was alright. Later, when someone asked what happened, A-- simply told them that she had fallen while running, not mentioning anything about me tripping her. Well, being the honest person I was, I piped up and told them exactly what had happened. A-- then turned and thwapped me, saying she wasn’t going to tell them that I had tripped her because she didn’t want me to feel bad. Now, that may not seem like much, but it meant a lot to me.

Along with A--’s sense of humor and compassion, she also knows how to have a good time. She can make the best out of a situation and can act on impulse. A few years ago we were painting the dog barn for fair, but we were only doing the dark blue colored trim that day. After a while, our 4-H leader had to go pick up a carpet shampooer to clean the rugs, trusting A-- and myself to behave and watch the younger kids. When our leader had been gone for a while, we began to get bored. Our creative side kicked in and we decided it would be fun to “decorate” the wall we were going to paint next time. Later, when our leader returned, she was greeted with a wall that had hand prints, “Hi”s and one “Hi People!” which was courtesy of A--, on it. That “Hi People!” was to be rememberd for quite a long time. None-the-less, our 4-H leader was very non-plussed. A-- took her share of the blame, unlike some other people did, and we ended up promising we would “come back and fix it” next time, if our leader didn’t kill us now. But all in all, it was quite fun.

Well, A-- may have her little quirks, such as her (blonde) related forgetfulness, but she’s always good for a laugh. She’s always there for you, no matter what it is you need to say. She watches out not only for her feelings, but yours as well. And above all, she knows how to have fun and especially to be a good friend.
