Nature Question

Yes, I know this is only one paragraph and by that it is not really a true essay, but ya know what? I don't care. ;) This was written for American Lit. The assignment was to discuss the value of nature, whether it had any value other than utilitarian. So basically we just had to blather. :) So this is what I wrote.(Written 11/27/00)

Nature has real value to us, and everything on this planet. While one may ask if nature has any true value other than utilitarian, one must also consider that everything is nature. It is rightly improbable, if not impossible, to say that there is something in nature that we don’t use. In one way or another, we need all of nature to survive. One thing effects another, and there is a chain reaction, always evolving and revolving either around us as a people, or the items we use to survive. It should be impossible to think of nature and not consider the air we breath or the ground we walk on as part of it. These are both essential for us to live, yet we do not consider we are consuming them in a utilitarian fashion. While on this train of thought, one must also consider that we are part of nature, and everything we use and need is also a part of nature or has come from it. In this way one may believe that there is no other use for nature than utilitarian, but if this were true than all we would need to survive would be an empty nothingness, which is as far from the truth as one can get. I do not believe there is a response to this question that cannot be argued, but I would like you to bear in mind that even if we did exist in a black nothingness, we would still have nature in every aspect of our lives because the desolate void would be our nature.
