There are many times in my life when there have been transitions that I have gone through, but one in particular sticks in my mind. I feel this one event has had the most effect on me. This event was when I moved down to Oregon from my old home in Washington.
A lot of things changed when I moved. Basic things, such as climate and recreational activities. But a lot more than that also changed. When we moved I had the opportunity to do things I would never have had the chance to in Forks [Washington]. I realized there was a lot more to life than just school and sports. There was a whole world out there with opportunities I now had the chance to experience.
The move influenced my maturity a great deal. I matured emotionally, taking on new responsibilities and gaining new respect. Once I got away from my friends that I grew up with, I started to grow up, too. I think I realized that at one point or another, happy-go-lucky childhood comes to an end, and one has to face the duties that come with adulthood. While being around my old friends I couldn’t do that.
Since I’ve had new opportunities to explore down here, I’ve been able to try a lot of new things. For example, the Explorer program has allowed me to begin pursuing the career I am interested in, whereas up in Forks, I would not have had that chance. That has really helped me to see what things are like past school.
I guess you could say what I went through was just “growing-up,” but the move influenced that process more quickly and earlier than it would have happened if I had stayed up in Forks. There was a great deal that occurred when we moved that caused me to mature, grow-up, and take on new responsibilities. I now have the courage, freedom, and knowledge I need to pursue my goals, and make my life what I want it to be. To have a life, one must live a little; and I now have the chance to do just that.
