Steps to Walk

This essay I wrote for Human Anatomy. It was supposed to help us learn the movements of joints better. Don't know if it worked or not. :) (Written 9/6/99)

***(This following paragraph I just felt compelled to write, so go ahead and skip it if you’d like. I call it my introduction. ;) )***

Now, I have figured out what movements the body goes through for a person to take two steps. I really don’t know why I did, except to be able to turn in this paper. And my parents did look at me quite strangely when I was walking around the house muttering things about dorsiflexion and plantarflexion to myself, but it’s not like they don’t think I’m weird anyway. :-) Anywho, here is the wonderful, albeit somewhat unentertaining (hopefully not too much so!), description of joint movements in taking two steps, (in paragraph form, nonetheless!)

***(Okay, I’m done now. :) )***

The first thing one must do to walk is plantarflex the left foot. By doing this you flex the left knee and hip. Now, some people move their arms when they walk and some don’t; I do, so I’m throwing that in here, too. Then comes the internal rotation of the right shoulder. Almost simultaneously, there’s the external rotation of the left shoulder. You should now extend your left knee in front of you, and dorsiflex your left foot placing it on the floor before you fall over. Whew! Congratulations! You have taken one step!

Next, plantarflex your right foot while extending your right hip. I’ve found it nearly impossible not to do both at the same time. Flex your right knee and hip, you should now be standing like a flamingo. My, don’t you look funny. :-) Then the left shoulder is internally rotated while the right shoulder is externally rotated. Extend your right knee in front of you and dorsiflex your right foot. Put that foot down before you fall down. There, that’s better. Step two has been taken! Another congrats for you!

And well, heck! I just realized I wrote down the steps for 3 steps. So I guess you get the benefit of a third step. Now begin by plantarflexing your left foot and extending you left hip. Flex your left knee and hip. Very good. :-) Extend your left knee and dorsiflex your left foot, bringing it parallel to your right leg and foot. Now put your foot down. There. Bravo! You have now just completed the wonderful taking of three (probably awkward, if you listened to me,) steps!
