A Childhood

Beautiful thoughts
Fill my mind
Wonderful memories
Of every kind
Nights filled with splendor
And fascination
Childlike wonder
And exploration
Nights turning to days
Sunrises, sunsets
Playing in golden rays
Compromises, youthful bets
Laughter ringing
Throughout the hills
Joyous singing
Throughout the dells
Romps in meadows
Tumbling grass
Playing with shadows
Fumbling, crash
Mothers drying
Tear-stained cheeks
Comforting crying
Children during the weeks
That are filled with summer
And filled with fun
Anticipating,
Twilight come
Scary noises
In the walls
Footsteps, voices
In the halls
Finding out
What’s really there
No need to shout
Now I’m aware
Nightmares wake me
In the night
Parents hold me
To calm my fright
Slowly passes
Dark to day
Smell the grasses
The fresh-cut hay
So the days
Come and go
Counting down
Ever so slow
For childhood leaves us
As fleeting as seasons
And forever gives us
The ways and reasons
To succeed
And rise above
But the greatest lesson learned

Was love.
