Graduation Speech

This was my high school graduation speech. Yes, it's in paragraph form, but it rhymes and I couldn't figure of any better place to put it on my website. So there.

Thank you for coming this afternoon to our graduation. It’s always nice to have a crowd to share in our celebration. Now I know that it’s quite commonplace to talk about future things to come, but this is all I really could think of, though it may be a bit humdrum. Try as I might (it was hard to believe) for once in my life witty words I could not conceive. So I decided instead of a speech spoke cleverly, I would give you my words in the form of poetry.

As we look back over the years, we see transformed our hopes and fears. Things we never thought could happen have occurred, and time has flown by in a colorful blur. We see our friends, growing and gone, but as their lives move so do ours carry on. Our teachers who’ve given us time and knowledge, have given us our start to move on into college. We thank everyone who has been there for us, who have helped us, guided us, and given us trust. (I know at least some students are mocking me now, asking “How can she be saying this? Tell me how?” And though they may never admit to something as sentimental as these words, deep in their hearts the echo of this speech may be heard).

And so I will continue in what I was saying, that through all the hopes and fears, curses and praying, we have finally arrived on this fateful day, when we look towards the future as high school fades slowly away. We have come to the time at last, to take one final look at the past, then head toward our future careers, leaving behind old troubling fears, and looking for new times in the future years. So now I won’t detain you any more, having come to a temporary end of my verbal store, I say thanks to all who have helped us through, and good luck for the graduating class of 2002!
