Silence

I kinda like this one. I was just thinking today about, I don't know, wotever. It didn't *quite* get what I was aiming at, but it was real close, and I think it still turned out pretty well. (Written 10/20/04).

Before all else there was silence,
Beyond all else there is silence,
After all else there will be silence.

Something stirs in the darkness –
Makes a ripple, a small flutter –
Indistinct and vague, it moves the void.

Faint waves appear, filling nothingness and blackness.
Life replaces non-life, light replaces dark.
Movement awakens sound within soundlessness.

Yet beyond the white life noise, there is silence,
Hovering just away, on the borders of consciousness.
Spirit lives, yet cannot completely force away solitude.

Something edges, stirs, pushes back;
Sinews of darkness threading through flesh of light.
It will not be denied.

Life’s noise continues, but feels the “other”.
Continues, yet its intensity fades, dwindles.
Fearing its end, feeling the aloneness pressing in, it flares.

It culminates in a boom, vivid colors.
Echoes and shimmering vibrations reverberate, fade.
Shadows cast slowly disappear.

The hum, the noise, gone, but not forever.
The darkness is alone again, filling emptiness.
Images persist in auras and shades – memories.

Silence returns for it is after all else,
Alone and ever present for it is beyond all else,
It waits, anticipates what is to come, for it is before all else.

It knows,
It remembers,
Life cannot exist in silence.
