The first thing that was going on today was a check on a mare and her foal. I'm not sure what was wrong with the mare, but they were checking her respiratory rate and heart rate. The foal had a luxated patella. He had had surgery to fix it by deepening the groove that the patella sits in and strengthening the tendons that surround it. They were also changing his wraps (bandages).

The other thing that went on today was a horse came in to get a growth on his lower gum line checked out. They took some radiographs of the growth to see if it involved the mandible or not. It was only very slightly into the bone. Then they took a biopsy of the growth to send away to a lab for diagnosis. If is was benign and didn't show any signs of getting larger, they would probably just let it be, since it didn't appear painful or irritating to the horse. If it came back as malignant then they would operate under general anesthesia to remove the growth. The owners took the horse home until the results come back.

And just a final note, I learned that little white bumps inside a horse's ear are often what's called aural plaques. These are caused by Similads (sp?) (more commonly know as No-See-Em's). If a horse has had the hair in his ears trimmed out, he is more likely to get aural plaques simply because the insects can get to the skin more easily. I don't believe that this was anything serious, they are just bug bites, from my understanding. And that ends today!
