Date 050903: Docking Bay OSU VTH, 1100-1300 hrs

There wasn't a whole lot going on today. The first thing I did was hold a mare's head while she was in the stocks getting a rectal exam and fluid drawn from her abdomen. When she was foaling the foal stuck its foot through her vaginal wall into the rectum, causing a tear. It hadn't been much of a problem up until now, but the mare was showing signs that things were starting to go downhill. I'm not sure what conclusion the vets came to about what to do. Regardless, I'm sure she'll probably be fine with proper treatment. (The foal, by the way, had loose tendons in his right hock area, so his leg was really weak. This is probably why the RV tear happened [that's my thought on it, anyway]).

After that I went and somewhat assisted with a neonatal foal (it was a baby donkey. Very cute!). I helped hold him so he didn't jump out of the pen, and helped measure out milk for him. He's being watched pretty much 24/7 right now, to make sure he's doing okay.

I also helped move an alpaca outside to a grazing area.

The last thing I did today was check on a horse periodically to make sure he wasn't bleeding excessively. That was neat, being responsible for that (because Dr. H-- asked me to watch the horse). Anyway, that's all for today!
