Today I ended up having to walk another horse with a... I think it's called either a tracheotomy or tracheostomy, I'm not sure. But it's the holes in the throat for drainage. It was disgusting, but at least he didn't really totally slime me like the last one.

Also there was a really nasty horse there today. She was trying to bite everyone, and actually nipped one of the students. I think she was in to try to determine the cause of chronic cholic. She got a rectal exam and an endoscopy.

The last really exciting thing today was a calf that came in with tetanus. The probability of its survival was pretty much nill, but the owners decided to try to save it anyway. The vet said the cause was probably an improper banding (castration). The band was too loose and the necrotic tissure moved up above the band and caused tetanus. The calf's muscles were all rigid, and it's neck was bent back so it was almost stretched towards its back. They removed the dead tissue (which was basically what was left of the testicles). I wasn't there long enough to get to hear or see what else they were going to do to try to save him. Anyway, more later!
