Space Date 112202: Docking Bay OSU VTH, 0900-1200 hrs

Caught the tail end of Grand Rounds. Afterwards I held a horse while it was having part of its cast removed. The bottom of the cast was causing a very painful wound where it rubbed against the pastern every time the horse bent the joint, so that part of the cast was removed. The wound was disinfected and bandaged.

After that, there really wasn't much more going on in the VTH clinic, so I got to head on over to the Theriobarn, where they were having a dental clinic on horses. It was really kind of kewl to see the different equipment, things that I've only seen non-electric, they actually had motorized. I also learned that the device used to prop open the horses mouth so he doesn't bite you is called a Mouth Speculum. And the teeth are numbered as follows:

Right upper: 100's
Left upper: 200's
Left lower: 300's
Right lower: 400's

And I even got to stick my hand in one of the horse's mouths and feel the sharp points that the students were working on filing off. It was really interesting to observe.

Other information I also picked up is that donkeys and mules, especially mules, are very difficult to sedate, so the sedative dosage has to be very high to work. I don't remember exact figures on that. Also, they are difficult to simply get the needle *into* to inject, unlike most horses who are fairly calm about it. And that pretty much concludes today.
