Space Date 120602: Docking Bay OSU VTH, 0900-1200 hrs

Caught the end of grand rounds. After that, I went and helped hold a horse while it was getting prepped for surgery to repair a fracture in its right front carpus area. I'm not sure the exact location. Then, amazingly enough, myself and the other pre-vet volunteer actually got to go and watch part of the surgery, tho we had to leave before it was over, due to time constraints.

It was kind of neat because we had to get on all the scrubs and stuff. That would include pants, shirts, masks, gloves, head thingies, and the booties. That was kewl in itself. Then we got to observe the anesthesiologists setting up, and the further prepping for surgery. This was basically scrubbing the area on the leg, setting out the needed tools, and covering the horse. It was kewl. The first thing that they did in the surgery was to use needles to mark important areas on the knee. Then radiographs were taken to make sure things were positioned properly. After, incisions were made for the arthroscope (sp?). But it was at this point I had to leave, so I'm afraid I can't tell you any more of this particular surgery. And that's all for today!
