The Lion and the Ant

I wrote this bit for an assignment in 7th grade in which we were required to invent our own fable.

Once there was an ant who liked to walk in the jungle. He’d follow the path that was trodden upon by humans. Every time a person came along he’d jump in the bushes. He was so small no one noticed him.

One day as he was out walking he heard footsteps. As was his custom he jumped into the brush. It wasn’t a person coming along the path, but a lion. The lion had just turned the corner when the ant jumped in the shrubs. The lion went over to the bushes and said to the ant, “Come out. There is no need to hide from me. I will not harm you.” The ant slowly came from the bushes.

“You are so large. Aren’t you afraid you’ll be spied by humans and shot and killed?” questioned the ant.

“No, my size and seemingly ferocious appearance scare them all away. I’m like the giant squid was to sailors in olden times. Dangerous. Something to be feared.”

As the ant and the lion kept talking they heard another set of footsteps. The wise ant immediately jumped in the bushes. The lion said to the ant, “I’m not hiding, I’ll scare him away.”

“You’ll be sorry,” the ant replied.

At the last moment the lion realized it wasn’t an ordinary person, but a hunter. He tried to hide in the brush, but he stuck out like a sore thumb. The little ant, however, was almost invisible. As the hunter came around the corner he saw the lion and shot him. The small ant went unnoticed.

The Moral To This Story Is:
Bigger is not always better.
