It All Happened on Spencer Street

And yet again here is another assignment from 6th grade. This one we were required to use a variety of given phrases and the setting of Spencer Street and then come up with a story.

It all happened on Spencer Street, one night some time ago. All was peaceful and quiet. The neighbors’ yards all contained their slumbering dogs. The crickets shirped softly from the bushes. The low tone of an owl’s who-whooing was heard from somewhere in the night. Even Allan’s cat, who was usually up prowling around the house, was sleeping soundly on the front steps.

Then suddenly all this peaceful bliss was disrupted when little Maureen’s hamster got loose. It scurried silently across the street, into the yard which contained Allan’s cat, and squeaked one tiny squeak when he saw the cat. The cat rose in a flurry, looked quickly around, saw the hamster and gave chase. This woke Jenny’s dog who was lying next door. He started up a howl which woke the other dogs who also started barking. The neighbors woke up and the children ran outside.

The adults grabbed the childrens’ hats and called to them to put their hats on. The kids snatched their hats and started to throw them around trying to catch the hamster. The adults ran inside, got the dogs’ bones and threw them at the dogs to try to get them to be quiet.

Finally one of the youths shouted, "I got him!" and held his hat up triumphantly with the hamster squirming around inside. Another chils caught the over-excited cat. The dogs finally hushed after the commotion died down. Everbody went back to bed and finally got some sleep.

This all happened on Spencer Street, on night some time ago.
