Cloverfield
Some friends are throwing a goodbye party and a large mysterious monster crashes it... and most of the city. The irony is that Rob is about to move to Japan. The capitol of giant sea monsters. Weird. I really like this film. Despite a few bad movies, I'm still a fan of movies filmed through a first person perspective with a video camera. One of the best things about films like this is there is no music to set up emotions or to let you know something is about to happen. The acting was pretty good too. I liked the fact that they used mostly unknowns too. It's also refreshing to see a mnster movie from the perspective of a few people scrambling to escape from it rather than trying to kill it.. or create another monster to batle it. Check this bad boy out! 4.5/5
Characters
- Rob: Lands a job in Japan and is being given a goodbye party. Should have left a day earlier...
- Beth: RObs recent love intrest. She leaves the party around the times the shit starts hitting the fan, and the better part of the movie is spent trying to get to her apartment. Fate unknown.
- Jason: Rob's brother, who is throwing the party. Gets smashed by the monster.
- Hud: Our camera man. Gets sucked into running the camera for the party and continues to roll as this start to blow up. Takes the job a little too seriously at the end and gets... partially eaten?
- Marlena: Sarcastic girl at the party who Hud has a thing for. Gets bitten by one of the smaller monster things. Eventually her head kinda explodes.
- Lily: Jason's girlfriend. Kind of a bland character. She flies off in a helecopter toward the end of the movie and I'm pretty sure she lives.
The Totals
- Body Count: 3. That's confirmed main character deaths. There were thousands of implied deaths though.
- Weapons Used: Gun, bombs and an axe.
- Gratuitous breast shots: 0
- Moments where characters are mysteriously unable to run from certain death: 1
- Ominous thunderstorms: 0
- Explosions: 23, but thats a really rough count. Things get crazy.
Things I learned about giant sea monster attacks.
- Horse carriages will survive the attack.
- Despite giant sea monster attacks, looting will still happen.
- Being attacked by a city-destroying monster may give you a real shot at a girl who's been blowing you off. But the downside is that her head will probably eplode from an infection.
- Never taunt the monster, even from the safety of a helecopter way above the city.
