I won't bore you with details of my drive from North Wales to Leeds ... let's just say it took me almost as long to find the conference centre on the University Campus as it had taken me to get from home to the city centre!
I finally arrived just after 10 am, and as pre-arranged, met Vengeance Girl in the car park. It was good to meet, and put a face to the name, after our recent correspondence. We hurried inside, and were relieved to find that the star guests hadn't arrived so we hadn't missed anything. The event was being held in a lecture theatre, not dissimilar to the one in UC Sunnydale where Buffy and Willow attended (some) lectures. In the entrance lobby, traders had set up two tables with Buffy and Angel related goodies - magazines, figures, bags, photos, t-shirts, etc - but apart from that the facilities were pretty spartan. Thankfully there was a coke-can dispensing machine near the loos, so two basic requirements were fulfilled, but I'd have liked food available onsite since we were there all day.
Our guests arrived around 10.30, looking very yummy and happy and very relaxed, and Andy Hallett has the most amazing tan! After the introductions, they talked to us about absolutely nothing and everything, and were very very funny. At around 11, we started to queue for the photo sessions. Andy and Mark had disappeared behind the curtain which separated the auditorium from the rear of the podium area, and we filed in singly to have our photos taken with them both. I snuggled between the two of them, hugging them both close and grinning like a cheshire cat as the camera flashed twice. Reluctantly leaving them, I wandered off to the merchandise table to see if temptation would get the better of me. Fortunately for my bank balance, there was nothing there that I didn't already have, so it was back to the auditorium to wait for the photo sessions to end.
Once everyone had had their photo taken with the two stars, they returned to the auditorium and the Mark & Andy show got on the road. Did I say they are very very funny? They're obviously friends, and do a great double act! They regaled us with tales of funny incidents, on and off set, and kept us laughing for almost two hours.
There was a brief break for lunch - some went in search of the campus cafe, whilst I congratulated myself in having the foresight (or lack thereof!) to buy a bag of crisps during my journey - then we were back in the auditorium for more hilarity, and a Q&A session. Many asked Andy about his singing, and someone on the front row asked him to sing 'happy birthday' to her friend, for whom she'd baked a cake. Andy was amazed to find that the cake was decorated with a fantastic portrait of The Host. He led the singing, and presented the cake to the birthday girl, who also got a kiss from both stars. Wow! What a great day to have a birthday!
After the Q&A session, it was time for autographs, and the two stars moved up to a gallery room while we began the queuing process. Vengeance Girl and I were first in the queue!! I asked both Mark and Andy to sign my Sunnydale High Yearbook - Andy noticed he'd signed it at the PBP, but still signed it again, adding the comment "Boy, you sure get around!" Mark graciously signed a photo I'd bought for my friend Tanya, and added his own personal message for her, which I thought was really nice. He has the most knee-weakening gorgeous smile, and very intense dark eyes - I very nearly swooned in his presence, and it occurred to me at the time that I would probably be reduced to a boneless puddle if DB ever looked at me like that! *g*
Whilst the autographs were being signed, we waited in the auditorium, and Stuart (the organiser) held a Q&A session regarding conventions, etc. I had a very interesting and informative chat with him after the Q&A session, and my admiration for him and his team was greatly reinforced.
When all the autographs were done, the two stars returned to the auditorium for the final session, which included a raffle. That event took a bizarre twist, as one group of three friends held practically all the winning tickets between them! Even when they gave the remainder away, out of sheer embarassment, the tickets kept winning prizes! Andy and Mark very generously contributed several extra signed photos, so that others in the audience had the chance of winning something!
All too soon, the day came to an end, and we waved and cheered and applauded as Andy and Mark bade us farewell. It had been a fabulous day, with two very attractive, generous, entertaining and interesting guys. (I hope they'll be at the 'End of Days' convention next May!)
P.S. Yet again, my camera let me down, but I've managed to salvage four shots from the day, and of course the autographed pic from the photo session. My letter is already on its way to Santa ...
