Computer Terms
- Algorithm- a step-by-step procedure for solving a problem or accomplishing some end especially by a computer
- Alphanumeric- consisting of both letters and numbers and often other symbols
- Binary- a binary number system
- Boot- something to equalize a trade
- Browser- a computer program used for accessing sites or information on a network
- Bug- an unexpected defect, fault, flaw, or imperfection
- Byte- a group of eight binary digits processed as a unit bya computer and used especially to represent an alphanumeric character
- Character- a symbol (as a letter or number) that represents information; also : a representation of such a character that may be accepted by a computer
- Chip- a small wafer of semiconductor material that forms the base for an integrated circuit
- Command- a signal that actuates a device(as a control mechanism in a spacecraft or one step in a computer); also : the activation of a device by means of such a signal
- Compatible- designed to work with another device or system without modification; especially: being a computer designed to operate in the same manner and use the same software as another computer
- Cursor- a visual cue (as a flashing rectangle) on a video display that indicates position (as for data entry)
- Data- factual information (as measurements or statistics)used as a basis for reasoning, discussion, or calculation
- Debug- to eliminate errors in or malfunctions of
- Directory- an alphabetical or classified list
- Disk Drive- a data-storage device consisting of a drive and one or more hard disks
- Documentation- the usually printed instructions, comments, and information for using a particular piece or system of computer software or hardware
- DOS- disk operating system
- Edit- to alter, adapt, or refine especially to bring about conformity to a standard or to suit a particular purpose
- E-Mail- Electronic Mail
- Field- a particular area (as of a record in a database) in which the same type of information is regularly recorded
- File- a complete collection of data (as text or a program) treated by a computer as a unit especially for purposes of input and output
- Floppy Disk- a small flexible plastic disk coated with magnetic material on which data for a computer can be stored
- FTP- file transfer protocol
- Function Key- any of a set of keys on a computer keyboard that have or can be programmed to have special functions
- Graphics- a product of graphic art
- Hard Copy- a copy of textual or graphic information (as from microfilm or computer storage) produced on paper in normal size
- Hard Disk- a rigid metal disk coated with a magnetic material on which data for a computer can be stored
- Hardware- the physical components (as electronic and electrical devices) of a an apparatus (as a computer)
- Hexadecimal- of, relating to, or being a number system with a base of 16
- HTML- a markup language that is a subset of SGML and is used to create hypertext and hypermedia documents on the World Wide Web incorporating text, graphics, sound, video, and hyperlinks
- HTTP- hypertext transfer protocol
- Integrated Circuit- a tiny complex of electronic components and their connections that is produced in or on a small slice of material (as silicon)
- Internet- an electronic communications network that connects computer networks and organizational computer facilities around the world
- Interface- the place at which independent and often unrelated systems meet and act on or communicate with each other
- 1 Gig- a unit of computer information storage capacity equal to 1,073,741,824 bytes
- 1 K- a unit of computer information storage capacity equal to 1024 bytes
- 1 Meg- a unit of computer information storage capacity equal to 1,048,576 bytes
- LAN- Local Area Network
- Memory- a device or a component of a device in which information especially for a computer can be inserted and stored and from which it may be extracted when wanted
- Menu- a list shown on the display of a computer from which a user can select the operation the computer is to perform
- Microprocessor- a computer processor contained on an integrated-circuit chip
- Modem- device that converts signals produced by one typeb of device (as a computer) to a form compatible with another (as a telephone)
- Monitor- a cathode-ray tube used for display (computer monitor)
- Operating System- software that controls the operation of a computer and directs the processing of programs (as by assigning storage space in memory and controlling input and output functions)
- Output- the information produced by a computer
- Port- a hardware interface by which a computer communicates with another device or system
- Program- a sequence of coded instructions that can be inserted into a mechanism (as a computer)
- Prompt- something that prompts
- RAM- Random Access Memory
- ROM- Read Only Memory
- Silicon- a tetravalent nonmetallic element that occurs combined as the most abundant element next to oxygen in the earth's crust and is used especially in alloys and electronic devices
- Syntax Error- Error in linguistic elements
- URL- the address of a computer or a document on the Internet that consists of a communications protocol followed by a colon and two slashes (as http://), the identifier of a computer (as www.m-w.com) and usually a path through a directory to a file -- called also uniform resource locator, resource locator
- User Friendly- easy to learn, use, understand, or deal with
- Windows- a means of entrance or access; especially : a means of obtaining information
- WWW- World Wide Web
