____Forgotten

When there is ever mention of the 2000 Olympic Mens' team, the names Blaine Wilson, the Hamm twins, and John Roethlisberger flow easily into the conversation. Sean Townsend isn't too far behind and then there seems to be a pause as to who could have been the 6th and final member. Who was that guy? What is his name?

This isn't the only case of the mystery gymnast. NBCOlympics.com had this fabulous picture feature on the Hamm twins, Blaine, and John. Once again the final gymnast on the team wasn't featured. He was forgotten.

Yet another instance on the shafting of this gymnast comes just a few nights ago. I was watching the re-broadcast of the tour on Fox Family. I listened intently to the good things the announcers had to say about Paul, Morgan, John, Blaine, Ryan, and all the girls yet nothing on this gymnast. To further inflicate pain on my soul, they cut out his little segment where he talks about what the Olympics meant to him.

The final blow of this forgotten star cames days after the Games when I decided to search the web for fansites. To my surprise, there wasn't a single site out there. Not one. This is incredible for a thing as large as the Internet and yet not one. That's why I had to start this page. I couldn't let the masses be in the dark any longer.

You obviously know who the mystery gymnast is or you wouldn't be here. However, there are others who have managed to look past all the talent and dedication of Steve. They somehow miss his positive attitude and joy of living. They seem to ignore the fact that in Sydney alone, Steve was the forgotten hero. Who was the only one who nailed that crucial high bar routine? It was Steve. Who qualified for the All Around yet gave up his spot to Paul due to injury? Steve. Everyone rants and raves about how amazing Paul was in the AA yet they don't seem to remember that he didn't even qualify alone. Steve had to pull out for Paul to get that chance. Don't get me wrong, I love Paul and he is amazing. It's just that I haven't forgotten how he got there.

The gymnastics world seems to forget about Steve at times but maybe that's because Steve isn't a spotlight hog. He's not agressive like Blaine, or a legend like John. He's not young, talented blood like Sean and the Hamms. He's merely so normal it's extraordinary and overlooked. He's raw talent with determined will. He's not trying to call attention to himself and he's just trying to do his thing. For the select few who see it, consider yourself spoiled. You can see what others can't. Please enlighten the masses about Steve McCain. He may not be the center of attention, but he doesn't deserve to be forgotten.
