Lacking focus
Stephen McCain showed potential by winning the gold medal on high bar at the 1993 U.S. Gymnastics Championships, and by qualifying for the 1994 (team) and 1996 (individual event) World Championships. But at the 1996 Olympic Trials, he fell off the high bar and finished 12th. "It was frustrating," he says. "I really felt like I wanted (to win) more than anyone, and I couldn't believe that I missed it. I definitely wasn't mentally prepared."

Winter of content
McCain finished fifth in the all-around at the U.S. Gymnastics Championships in 1998, and ninth in 1999. He was a member of the U.S. squad that placed sixth at the 1999 World Championships, where he competed on four of the six apparatuses during the team competition. In early 2000, after placing seventh at the RCA Gymnastics Challenge, McCain won the Winter Cup Challenge. "This was the most fun I have had at a meet in a long time," he said after the Winter Cup triumph. "I wasn't afraid to get physical tonight and it felt great." His strong year continued at nationals in July, when he placed fourth in the all-around to earn a spot at the Olympic Trials.

And... action! In his spare time, McCain uses his gymnastics ability to earn extra money as a TV stunt double. He has appeared in a commercial for a pharmaceutical company and in an episode of "Love Boat: The Next Wave."
