A quick word or two on some things that have been bugging the hell out of me.
America - what a wonderful country! We have double standards facing us wherever we turn, laws to protect everyone from everything. I love when politicians stand on their soapboxes and claim that they want to ‘protect’ us from anything harmful by making laws against guns, pollution, sex, alcohol, drugs, film content, book content, media control, and basically homogenizing society.
What the poor bastards don’t get is that the 50’s are over. Watergate happened. The Vietnam War happened. The attempted deportation of John Lennon happened. The world has changed, and we don’t need laws to stifle us and keep us from breathing. We need laws that are open-ended. Laws that aren’t so much rules as guidelines.
We need to stop worrying about how to make the world a happy place for everyone and start worrying about how to do the things government is supposed to do – make sure the states are able to control their areas. Make sure schools are top notch. Make sure those who want jobs can work. Make sure that our prisons punish and rehabilitate.
I hate our country. Every time someone stubs their toe, they sue someone – creating new laws and more headaches for the rest of us. If you ask me, if you are driving and you spill a hot drink on yourself, it’s YOUR OWN DAMNED FAULT! If you can’t drive and do anything else at the same time, then JUST DRIVE! You’re in a car, for Fuck’s sake! If you are walking on the sidewalk during a snowstorm and fall, once again the BLAME IS ALL YOURS! You are responsible for your own safety and well-being. Not the businesses that happen to be set up where your fat ass goes down. Of course, these kinds of legal battles are only the tip of the iceberg.
How about companies that intentionally pollute, poison, and hurt us? I say they are liquidated and another company is found to provide the services they were providing. The money from the liquidation goes to their victims – NOT THE LAWYERS! – and to the area in which the problems happened to help clean it up. This may seem drastic, but it’s better than having price hikes just to support fat cats who get fatter no matter how much bad they do!
As far as censorship goes, here’s a thought for you. If you see something that you feel your child shouldn’t be watching, TELL THEM NOT TO WATCH or CHANGE THE CHANNEL! I’m sick of all the bullshit about people being hurt by what they see, hear, and read. GET OVER IT! This is the real world, where not everyone is going to say nice things or do nice things. This is where you WILL be hurt and you WON’T like everyone and everything you see. Welcome to ADULTLAND! We have to remember OUR RIGHTS, people! We are guaranteed the right to free speech! Censorship is a dangerous path. It starts slowly, with the government trying to impose a rating system. Then a few people are arrested for selling an album or a book to the wrong person. Soon it evolves into something horrendous and devastating, unable to be stopped because the mindless masses so long ago craved ‘Protection’. In ADULTLAND, we protect our own asses. I don’t worry about you and your kids, don’t worry about me and mine.
What we have to remember is that this is a big country, with people who have greatly different points of view. The only way to appease these people is to keep the laws liberal. Think about it before you start cursing me. If you believe in God and want to do his work, isn’t it true that part of that is to respect the rights of your fellow man? I am not talking about anarchy or the destruction of the churches. I’m simply saying that we ALL have rights and beliefs, not just the Judeo-Christians. I am against abortion, but I believe it should be legal. Why? Because it is for the mother and the father to decide what to do. I believe in legalized marijuana. Why? Because if someone wants to smoke a relatively harmless drug in their home, why should I say otherwise? It isn’t my body. If you look at the laws of our country as open-ended, you will begin to see that people will be less likely to be enraged, more likely to actually help one another, and maybe even feel that they really ARE living in a free country.
I guess what I’m saying is we should strip away all the silliness, the frivolous laws, the laws against victimless crimes, and throw them away.
