Pictures from My Second Trip to Moscow

May 9-22, 1999

Moscow State University

Moscow State U. Clocks Moscow State University, which lies on a hill near Moscow. A large campus. This is the main building. The two clock faces were something of an enigma. The one on the right had the local time. The one on the left had a range of 70 to 78 or so. We could not figure out what the units were; they could not be degrees! My net-buddy, Otto Makela, suggests that the left dial indicates barometric pressure. This seems plausible if it the units are centimeters of mercury. If so, it's ironic, because one member of our party subsequently went shopping for a barometer! Perhaps the urge to buy a barometer was the result of subliminal influence.

Moscow State U. and Dog Another view of the main building at Moscow State University. Large wild dog in foreground.

Moscow State U. 3 And another view of the main building at Moscow State University. I can't believe I took this picture. The composition is completely wrong.

Moscow State U. Main Entrance And another view of the main building at Moscow State University. This was taken from what looked like the main entrance.

Moscow State U. Pool Moscow State University with a somewhat run-down building on the left. There is a some sort of (probably decorative) pool in the foreground.

Fellow Travelers From left to right, Ross Drake and Scott Dubach of Boeing Huntsville and Todd May, a JSC employee at MSFC. Moscow State University in the background.

The Way We Were Todd May took this picture. From left to right, Scott Dubach, me, and Ross Drake.

View of Moscow from Moscow State U. This is a view of Moscow from the edge of the hill where Moscow State University is located. This view is largely dominated by this stadium building.

View from hill 1 Another part of the view from the hill near Moscow State U.

View from hill 2 Another part of the view from the hill near Moscow State U. Yes, a river runs through it.

Skaters When I took the some of the previous pictures from the hill, I was standing on top of a ski jump that had been built for the Moscow Winter Olympics that the USA boycotted. Here, I decided to turn around and face the other direction. There were a large number of roller bladers around. It was a good area for roller blading as long as you could dodge the maniacal Russian drivers.
