May 20th The games of the second olympiad starts in Paris with 1330 (1,319male and 11 female) athletes from 21 nations taking part. The games consisted of 85 events covering 17 sports.

1904

May 14th The first Olympic games to be held in the United States opened in St. Louis, Missouri.
July 1st The games of the third olympiad ends in St. Louis. 687 athletes (681male, 6 female) from 13 nations took part.
The games consisted of 96 events covering 14 sports.

1906

May 22nd the 10th anniversary Olympic games closed in Athens.

1912

May 5th The games of the fifth olympiad starts in Stockholm with 2547 athletes (2490 male, 57 female) from 29 nations taking part. The games consisted of 102 events covering 29 sports.

1924

May 4th The games of the eigth olympiad start in Paris with 3092 athletes (2956 male, 136 female) from 45 nations taking part. The games consisted of 126 events covering 17 sports.
August 20th British Sprinter Eric Liddell refused to rin un the 100m because it was on a Sunday.

1928

May 17th The games of the ninth olympiad starts in Amsterdam with 3014 athletes (2724 male, 290 female) from 46 nations taking part. The games consisted of 109 events covering 14 sports.

1932

July 30th The games of the tenth olympiad starts in Los Angeles with 1408 athletes (1281 male, 127 female) from 37 nations taking part. The games consisted of 117 events covering 14 sports.

1936

August 1st The games of the eleventh olympiad start in Berlin with 4066 athletes (3738 male, 328 female) from 49 nations taking part. The games consisted of 129 events covering 19 sports.

1948

July 29th The games of the fourteenth olympiad starts in London with 4099 athletes (3714 male, 385 female) from 59 nations taking part. The games consisted of 136 events covering 17 sports.

1952

July 19th The games of the fifteenth olympiad starts in Helsinki with 4925 athletes (4407 male, 518 female) from 69 nations taking part. The games consisted of 149 events covering 17 sports.

1956

June 10th The equestrian events of the sixteenth olympiad starts in Stockholm with 58 athletes (45 male, 13 female) from 29 nations taking part. The games consisted of 6 events.

1960

August 25th The games of the seventeenth olympiad starts in Rome with 5348 athletes (4738 male, 610 female) from 84 nations taking part. The games consisted of 150 events covering 17 sports.

1964

October 10th The games of the eighteenth olympiad starts in Tokyo with 5140 athletes (4457 male, 683 female) from 94 nations taking part. The games consisted of 163 events covering 19 sports.

1968

October 12th The games of the ninteenth olympiad start in Mexico City with 5531 athletes (4750 male, 781 female) from 113 nations taking part. The games consisted of 172 events covering 18 sports.

1970

May 15th The International Olympic Committee officially ended all ties with South Africa, effectively barring its athletes from competing in the games.

1976

July 17th The games of the twenty first olympiad start in Montreal with 6189 athletes (4915 male, 1274 female) from 93 nations taking part. The games consisted of 198 events covering 21 sports.

1980

May 15th the West German Olympic Committee voted not to send a team to the Moscow Olympics, in compliance with President Carter's call for an international boycott.
July 19th The games of the twenty second olympiad start in Moscow with 5512 athletes (4320 male, 1192 female) from 81 nations taking part. The games consisted of 203 events covering 21 sports.

1984

May 14th the chairman of the Soviet Union's Olympic Committee told a Moscow news conference his country's decision to withdraw from the summer games in Los Angeles was "irrevocable."
July 28th The games of the twenty third olympiad start in Los Angeles with 7078 athletes (5458 male, 1620 female) from 140 nations taking part. The games consisted of 221 events covering 21 sports.

1988

September 17th The games of the twenty fourth olympiad start in Seoul with 9421 athletes (6983 male, 2438 female) from 160 nations taking part. The games consisted of 237 events covering 23 sports.

1992

July 25th The games of the twenty fifth olympiad start in Barcelona with 10563 athletes (7555 male, 3008 female) from 171 nations taking part. The games consisted of 257 events covering 25 sports.

1996

July 19th The games of the twenty sixth olympiad start in Atlanta with 10744 athletes (7060 male, 3684 female) from 197 nations taking part. The games consisted of 271 events covering 26 sports.

1997

September 5th Athen's Greece selected for 2004 Olympics.

2000

September 16th The games of the twenty sixth olympiad start in Sydney. The games covered 27 sports.
